Why I Teach

I teach for the awkward
for the friendless and fearful.
I teach for the kids who bring
tattered, worn books to lunch
mingling with the peanut butter and jelly
their closest friend
their number one confidant.
A sounding board
for the soundless.

I teach for the teased
for the boyfriend less
girls with long, feathered
bangs that hang
over their sad, buoyant eyes.

I teach to remember.
The insides of bathroom stall walls
the ink cascading secrets.

I am Holden Caulfield
with no audience.

I remember staring at my adolescent self
in the muddled mirror of my Jr. High days
unsure of how much I trusted myself
to get me out alive.

Looking back now,
at those timeless, murky years,
I teach to offer a light
a small dancing candle beam
at the end of this mossy, daunting canal.
